East Asian flavours

Most Asian restaurants in Gothenburg tend to offer food from just one country. Hello Monkey is a bit more inventive, mixing flavours from across the eastern part of the continent in fresh and funky surroundings.

We love this restaurant’s unusual takes on the classic Korean bibimbap, especially the one with spicy Vietnamese sausage and candied cashew nuts. Another variation of the same dish comes with tofu and shitake mushrooms.

Here you can also get your taste buds around fried gyoza dumplings stuffed with sweet potato and corn, or try raw cuts of beef and fish (a vegan-friendly sashimi is also available).

If you want to share food with your dinner date or are just extremely hungry, go for one of the bigger dishes such as fried perch with som tam (papaya salad) and langoustines, or the grilled duck served with hoisin and chilli.

The menu is pretty long but everything we’ve tried so far has been good – the only real problem is deciding what to go for. Prices are a little higher than at some of the other restaurants nearby: expect to pay at least 160 SEK for a main course without drinks.

Note that this review is for Hello Monkey on Linnégatan – there’s another branch across town on Magasinsgatan with a slightly different menu.
