America meets Sweden

6

“From America to Sweden”, says the sign out front. This cosy, wood-panelled restaurant is one of the newer joints where Gothenburgers can eat burgers. And the concept is pretty neat: US-style food made with ingredients sourced from local producers. It’s not perfectly done but if you like your American food, it’s still a good place to have a reasonably priced dinner.

Here you can choose between four different types of hamburger, including one made with pickled pineapple, coriander and chilli mayonnaise. These burgers are all served up without any sides or dips, so you might have to order some of the very good sweet-potato fries or grilled corncobs to walk away feeling full.

If you’re not a fan of the whole meat-between-bread thing, there also cuts of beef, fish and pork to tuck into. Veggies haven’t got masses of choice, as you might expect, but there’s a meat-free pie on the menu, and a salad that comes with roasted hazelnuts and grilled avocado. You can wash down your food with a milkshake or even a bottle of the restaurant’s own-brand beer.

Even if you just have a drink at the bar, The Barn is cool spot to spend an hour or two. The wood-and-brick interior lends it a real farmstead feel, and the exposed lampshades and copper-coloured pipes give the whole restaurant a nice warm glow. We just wish the food was a bit more exciting, and that the staff had flashed us a smile.
