Brilliant brunches

8

Down by the moat that runs through central Gothenburg, flashy Ritz does a bit of everything: lunches, afternoon teas, after-work beers, cocktails and even late-night snacks.

However, we reckon there’s just one unmissable mealtime at Ritz, and that’s brunch. Believe us: this place takes its brunches seriously. Arrive on a Saturday or Sunday between roughly 11am and 4pm, pay 189 SEK, and you’ll then have the run of a very big and very tasty buffet. If you’re hungry after sightseeing or feel hungover after a night out, this is the perfect remedy.

All the usual Swedish breakfast stuff is on offer but there are also pancakes with blackberry jam and cream, vitamin-packed beetroot salads, bowls of fresh fruit and some great smelly cheeses. Over by the kitchen you can get all sorts of meaty stuff, from fresh ribs to chicken drumsticks smothered in barbecue sauce.

Coffee, tea and water are all included in the price, but you can always pay extra if you feel like having a beer or cocktail. Desserts like chocolate brownies sprinkled with coconut are also part of the deal and, as you can go back for refills as many times as you like, you may find you’re still full by dinnertime.

Couples and solo travellers probably won’t have too much trouble getting a table but it does get busy at around midday, so book ahead if there are a few of you. In the summer most people eat under the parasols at the front, where there are baby olive trees and nice views over the water, but there are also tables inside beneath glittering chandeliers.
