Hotell Gästis

Retro charm

7

There’s a certain retro appeal to this long-running hotel in the middle of Jokkmokk, whose neon sign makes it look like a motel that’s been shipped in from somewhere in rural America.

The interiors at Hotell Gästis are really quite dated but they feel warm, clean and welcoming, and the bedrooms aren’t a bad size for the money.

Framed paintings and photographs give the sleeping spaces lots of character, while the lobby oozes alpine charm. There are timber panels and carved wooden signs directing guests to other parts of the building, like the sauna and the shared guest lounge, which has an open fireplace.

Hotell Gästis in Jokkmokk

When we last visited there was talk of the current owners selling up, though at the time of writing rooms were still available to book.

This is usually one of the first places to get booked up during Jokkmokk’s winter market (held annually in early February) so if you think you’ll be in town at that time of year, plan as far ahead as possible.
