Although it’s aimed primarily at business groups on team-building trips, this big, well-run hotel and conference facility has a sweet location near Luleå’s airport, so tourists sometimes end up staying the night too.
At first glance Nordkalotten looks really promising; the hotel block is modern and the lobby is full of character, with thick logs covering the walls and mean-looking stuffed animals decorating the place.
After that, the carpeted rooms come as a bit of a disappointment. The smallest, cheapest ones feel dated, but the larger rooms are a bit fresher and have the added bonus of a private sauna in their en-suite bathrooms – a rarity, even in Sweden.
Breakfast (included) is served up in a nice restaurant on the ground floor, and all guests get use of the hotel’s pool and shared sauna. Nordkalotten has loads of parking at the front and is easy to reach using public transport. Bus number 4 stops right outside Nordkalotten, connecting it with the centre of Luleå and the airport, just 2km to the southeast.
If taking the bus sounds too boring, the hotel can arrange for a horse-drawn carriage to pick you up when your flight arrives – just ask.
