Loud tunes and late-night banter

Out by Sjöfartsmuseet in a part of town that’s increasingly popular with Gothenburg’s young party crowd, Oceanen is a cracking place to go drinking.

Big, sociable picnic benches are lined up under a funky outdoor terrace, which is lit up by fairy lights and decorated with streams of plastic flowers. Order a beer from the long outdoor bar, find a space to sit down (often more difficult than it sounds) and you’ll have made new friends in no time.

Gigs regularly take place in the indoor bar, and although you may have to pay to get in, the music is loud enough that it spills out through the doors and windows. That’s one of the best things about this place – it’s far enough away from the centre that nobody worries too much about the booming tunes and raucous chatter.

Oceanen, Gothenburg

Oceanen also acts as a kind of cultural venue that’s rented out by local musicians, dancers and artists, so it attracts plenty of creative types as well as the usual thirsty students. Keep your eyes peeled for one-off events, such as bluegrass parties and Japanese music festivals.

Hungry? The seasonal menu here is stacked with French soups, casseroles and sandwiches, with mains priced around 170 SEK. It’s not possible to book a table, so it’s best to arrive early.
