We’ll start by saying that there’s nothing special about this café. If you just want a coffee and some cake in cosy surroundings then there are better places in Gothenburg. However, if you’re interested in learning languages and meeting new people then it’s definitely worth a visit.
Språkcaféet (the language café) hosts language-learning meet ups four evenings per week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
A few different languages are scheduled for use each night, and there is a table dedicated to each one inside the café. You don’t need to book a place – just turn up and start chatting.
Obviously your experience at Språkcaféet will depend on who else is there, but there’s usually a lively group of people from half a dozen different countries, all at different stages in the language-learning process. Even if English is your only language, you can still get involved with helping others and make friends along the way.
Although the language sessions at Språkcaféet are free, the café asks that you spend at least 45 SEK on food or drink before you get stuck in. A sandwich or a beer should cover it.
Language meet ups take place in Chinese, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Germany, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Swedish and Portuguese. For exact times and to find out which day each language is spoken (the schedule changes), visit the Språkcaféet website.
