UPDATE: This place is now closed.

Linnéa Art Restaurant is unusual. Unusual in that it doesn’t have a Michelin star, despite being one of Gothenburg’s best restaurants, and unusual in the way that it combines food with… glass.

All around the restaurant are multi-coloured artworks made of glass, from bendy bottles and bulbous vases to shiny, animal-shaped ornaments. Even the sinks in the toilets, which look like blocks of ice with fish frozen inside, are little works of art.

But all of that decorative stuff pales into insignificance once you sit down and start eating. The superb, playfully presented fine-dining menu includes dishes from land and sea, such as spruce-bark cheese, Swedish beef with chestnuts and caviar, and lobster with lingonberries.

This set meal is six courses long, but extends well beyond that when the staff bring out surprise courses and palate cleansers. To give you a quick example, we had an incredible sorbet served up in a frozen glass skull. This is serious food with a cheeky twist.

Allow a couple of hours and expect to pay around 1200 SEK per person – more with wine. A cheaper bistro menu is also available, including fresh oysters and a shellfish soup.
