Scandic Hasselbacken, Stockholm

There aren’t many hotels in Djurgården so most tourists end up staying elsewhere and taking the tram or ferry over when it’s time to see a museum or two.

But if you’re planning to spend a lot of time at the museums or would rather just stay away from the city centre then Scandic Hasselbacken – one of two places to stay in Djurgården – is actually a pretty good choice. The Vasa Museum, Skansen and the Abba Museum are all just a short walk away.

The hotel is relatively new but there’s been some kind of restaurant on this leafy plot since the 1700s. By the mid-1800s the place was well known across Stockholm and could list local celebrities like the novelist August Strindberg among its patrons.

The glass-covered restaurant you see today is a more modern joint, though the chandeliers and pleasant garden views mean that it’s still a nice spot for lunch, especially in the summertime when guests spill out onto the terrace.

Rooms at Scandic Hasselbacken are decent – they’re simple, mid-range affairs decorated in shades of terracotta and sandy yellow. Prices are a touch high but discounts are often available if you book ahead online.

Stay here and you’ll get use of the hotel’s gym, sauna and plunge pool. Bicycles are available to rent.
