Arctic Eden

Cosy rooms at high prices

7

We really like Arctic Eden’s spacious rooms, which are housed in a former school near the city centre, but the prices are a little too high for what is essentially a mid-range hotel.

The building itself is just a five-minute walk from the centre of town with a huge car park out front. It’s warm and cosy in the lobby, where reindeer skins are draped over the seats, and the whole hotel is spotlessly clean (in fact, we could still smell the cleaning chemicals wafting through the corridors when we looked around).

Rooms at Arctic Eden are some of the most luxurious in central Kiruna, with rustic-style rafters along the ceilings and exposed brickwork along some of the walls. TVs and Sami-style art complete the picture. “Sami suites” with their own dining tables are also available.

Just downstairs from the lobby level is a nice, softly lit swimming pool – it’s okay for wallowing around in and relaxing, but not really long enough for doing lengths. Down one more set of steps from the pool, you’ll reach the hotel’s gym.

There are two restaurants at Arctic Eden: one is a very popular family-friendly place doing Westernised versions of Asian dishes (Thai spaghetti with meat sauce, anyone?) and a smarter evening joint doing Sami-inspired cuisine.
