Paintings by local artists often decorate the walls at Gamla Apoteket, a gorgeous-loooking wooden pharmacy that dates back to 1901. Since selling off its last batch of lotions and potions in 1982, Jokkmokk’s old chemist’s shop has been turned into a kind of gallery and all-round community centre that regularly puts on events and exhibitions.
It’s free to go inside and have a look around. Often, all three floors are given over to exhibitions that include everything from watercolours and acrylics to contemporary photography. The northern lights feature heavily, as do wild flowers and snowy landscapes.
Lots of the works of art shown at Gamla Apoteket are for sale, and as everything is on a small, local scale, there’s a good chance that you’ll get to meet the artists who made them, too.
Another reason to come to Gamla Apoteket is to try to arrange a guided tour of the Jokkmokk area. English-speaking guides are often available and can take you on tours that are tailored to your interests.
