Hotell Skiftsgården

Overall 8

Handsome manor house

Classic manor-house styling and a sleepy location out by the old church town make Hotell Skiftsgården a nice alternative to the modern hotels in the city centre.

The old rectory is surrounded by rust-red wooden outbuildings and neatly fenced lawns, giving a quaint, farm-like feel to the place.

It’s also just across the road from Skellefteå’s main church, a neo-classical beauty that dates back to 1799.

Hotell Skiftsgården in Skellefteå

Clean and comfortable, rooms at the hotel are decorated in shades of cream and white and have furnishings from local design firm Allinwood.

The twin room we looked at had a bit of a strange layout, with the two beds positioned top to tail (you might end up touching toes with your roommate in the night). Otherwise it seemed good for the money. Double rooms are more spacious.

A small gallery on the main building’s top floor shows oil paintings and watercolours by the 19th-Century artist Anna Nordlander, who grew up at the manor. Saunas are free for guests to use but it costs 125 SEK per person to splash about in the hotel’s hot tubs – there are two of them out in the courtyard.

If you’re planning to stay in Skellefteå at the weekend and want breakfast in the morning it can actually work out cheaper to stay at Hotell Stiftsgården than in the attached hostel. That breakfast, served in the oldest, most charming part of the hotel, is worth sticking around for; it’s one of the best we’ve seen in northern Sweden.

As always we’ve quoted weekend prices here – just be aware that rates go up during the week.
