Kaffekoppen

Some of the cafés and restaurants in Gamla Stan are excellent, but many charge over-the-top prices for average-quality food, knowing that they’ll always have a steady stream of new arrivals to rely on.

This is especially obvious on and around Stortorget, the old town’s main square, where million-dollar views of the pretty gabled buildings seem to drive prices up to eye-watering levels.

But Stortorget is a beautiful spot to relax and admire some of Gamla Stan’s finest 17th-Century architecture. And if you’re doing a lot of sightseeing, you’re bound to end up here eventually. So, when it does, head to Kaffekoppen.

The tall, rust-coloured building sits right on the square and the prices for soft drinks are surprisingly reasonable – you’ll pay about 30 SEK for a cup of tea or coffee. Lasagnes, bakes and sandwiches are also available but quite frankly, you can find better-value food just a few streets away.

Swedes seem to like Kaffekoppen too, so there’s every chance you’ll end up sitting beside a local on the tightly spaced seats out front. If it’s too chilly, or raining, then head inside – the dark and moody interior is well worth a look.
