Youth hostels aren’t for everyone, and staying at proper hotels can quickly empty your wallet. Don’t worry though, budget travellers; there is another way!

Farsta

From $43/night

It may be small, but this basement flat in the leafy district of Farsta is in a quiet neighbourhood near shops, restaurants and parks.

Spotlessly clean and recently redecorated, it’s just eight minutes’ walk from Svedmyra subway station, a short train ride from the centre of Stockholm.

Friendly superhost Karin and her family live upstairs, and can provide helpful information and suggestions about Stockholm.

Ekerö

From $50/night

If you fancy staying away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this traditional-style wooden cottage on Ekerö could be a good shout. There’s space for two people and it’s just 200 metres from the nearest beach.

Guests have access to a washing machine, a tumble dryer and – brilliantly – a rowing boat. Three-night minimum stay.

Swedish simplicity is the name of the game in this small studio cabin in the woods. It may be surrounded by nature, but it’s just half an hours’ drive from Stockholm – or you can walk to the local pier and get a boat into the city.

In the Stockholm suburb of Nacka, the cabin is close to nature reserves and swimming lakes, so you can live like a local but still explore the sights of the city.
