Approached up a tree-lined drive, this red wooden house is one of the best places to stay in Jokkmokk. It’s part of the STF group of hostels, and offers a mix of private rooms and dorms.
Just a few years ago this old forest ranger’s house felt tired and unloved, but it’s since been renovated to offer bright, good-value accommodation. We stayed in the spacious six-bed dorm on the ground floor, but there are also smaller rooms upstairs.
Overall, rooms and dorms here are a little more stylish than at your average STF hostel, with flower-shaped lamps, modern roller blinds, pine coloured bunks and framed black-and-white pencil drawings of bears on the walls.
Jokkmokk Hostel has a good-sized kitchen, and there’s also a cosy TV room on the first floor with its own small library of DVDs. If you need to warm up after a cold day outside, there’s a sauna down in the basement (30 SEK charge), along with shared showers and toilets.
The hostel itself isn’t too far from the shops (or the train and bus stations, for that matter) but there’s handy parking right beside the building if you need it.
Note that as with many hostels in the north of Sweden, the reception desk is only staffed for a short while each day; make sure you call ahead if you’re checking in out of hours. Discounts are available for STF members.
