The More, Lund – Routes North

If you don’t mind a bit of a walk or bike ride from the centre of town, The More is an excellent top-end choice. It’s one of the most luxurious places to stay in the whole city and has some fabulous weekend rates on its very roomy rooms.

Built in 1906, the building once served as a service depot for railway trains. The carriages have disappeared and the building has been given a totally new lease of life, but some of the original architectural features remain, like the arched-shaped windows and extra-wide doors, which let daylight flood into the hotel.

Other hints about the building’s former life include the moody, black-and-white pictures of wheels, pistons and other greasy train parts adorning the corridors. Otherwise, it’s all pretty modern.

The bright, fresh and stylish lobby has a slick, oblong fireplace set against a backdrop of grey slate. If you get lucky with the weather, you can sit outside on the open-air terrace, which has dark grey armchairs to sink into. Raining? Retreat to the ‘relax’ area, where you’ll find a free-to-use sauna, a gym, and a big-ass hot tub.

Rooms at The More are actually more like little studio flats – each one has a kitchenette with its own microwave and dishwasher, along with all the stuff you need to rustle up a quick meal. The smallest rooms are fine for two people but there are also larger, more expensive rooms designed for four guests if you want a bit more space to spread out.

There isn’t much happening in the immediate area at night, but the hotel has private parking and also has a few bikes for guests if you’d rather not walk or drive into town. As a guide, it takes around 15 minutes to get to the cathedral on foot.

Conference groups sometimes stay here, which might explain why prices rise so much during the week – rates on a bed-and-breakfast basis can be as much as a third higher on weekdays. Special rates are available for longer-term stays.
