Cheery Thai takeaway

8

If you like Thai food but don’t fancy paying for the full-on themed experience that’s offered at Koh Phangan – fake thunderstorms and all – then look no further than Mae Thai in Södermalm.

More of a takeaway joint than a proper restaurant, it has just a few wooden picnic benches on the edge of the street, painted in lurid shades of pink and green. Plastic mangoes, artificial palm trees and dangling floral garlands help to brighten the place up a bit.

The food is rustled up by Thai chefs in Hawaiian shirts and is actually surprisingly good for the money, with an authentically spicy kick.

We had a very tasty massaman curry for 79 SEK but loads of others options are available, and almost all of them can be ordered without meat if you prefer. A few of the dishes are vegan-friendly. There’s also a children’s menu with smaller portions at roughly half the price.

At lunchtimes during the week, a half-dozen or so different meals – like pad thai and a red curry with beef – are available for just 69 SEK each.
