Down by the harbour and just a short walk from Luleå’s main shopping area, Kulturens Hus is a beacon of fun and entertainment for the city’s residents. This big, modern structure houses the city library, two concert venues, plus a popular restaurant with views across the water.
You can come here to catch a gig or show, but the thing that attracts most short-term visitors is the tourist information office on the ground floor (Mon–Fri 10am–5pm), which has information on local walking trails and cycle routes (see our section on getting around for details of where to hire a bike).
Staff at the tourist office speak good English and should also be able to provide you with a decent map of the town and give guidance on exploring the Luleå Archipelago by boat.
The other big reason for visiting Kulturens Hus is to look around the excellent Konsthallen (art gallery), which features works by artists from across Sweden. It’s pretty small but very well put together – you may get lucky and see paintings and sculptures inspired by local landscapes (when we last visited, there were works featuring reindeer, forests and skies full of twinkling stars).
Even if you don’t want to eat in the restaurant upstairs, it’s worth going upstairs to admire the view of the harbour area.
