Starting in Skinnskatteberg, around two hours’ drive west of Stockholm, this is a relaxing evening tour that lets you explore a calm and peaceful lake.

There’s also a very good chance of seeing beavers in their natural habitat – beavers have been spotted on every one of these tours for over 10 years.

Tour program

The tour begins when you meet your guide in Karmansbo in the early evening. You’ll get a detailed introduction to beavers, as well as practical guidelines on how to behave in the wild in order to increase the chances of seeing the animals at their best.

A beaver lodge can be as tall as a human, and on this tour you’ll quickly see why beavers are called the ‘engineers’ of the forest. They’re a vital part of the boreal forest ecosystem.

Before heading out in search of beavers, you’ll sit down to enjoy a tasty dinner outdoors – expect smoked wild boar wrapped up in a flat bread and stuffed with organic vegetables. You can also try a healthy berry drink or a bottle of local craft beer. There will also be organic coffee and tea as well as homemade chocolate cookies for dessert.

After eating, you’ll help push the rubber, electric-powered boats into the water. The boats are powered by a very silent electric motor to avoid scaring away wildlife. The lake chosen for this tour is ideal for beaver watching, and is home to several beaver families and their lodges.

You’ll spend the evening silently cruising across the water keeping your eyes peeled for beavers and other wildlife. Sometimes it’s possible to see several beavers at once, either on the shore or swimming close to our boat. When darkness falls, you and your guide will return to the starting point to conclude the tour.

When is the best time to take this tour?

The season between April and September is usually best for beaver watching. June and July means better light conditions for photography but it also means the tour needs to stay out later at night.

The starting and ending time for this tour depends on the season. Please make sure you reach the meeting point in time for the tour as the guide may not be able to wait for you if you are late.

Who can take this tour?

The recommended minimum age is eight years, as the tour often stays out until late in the evening. This tour involves no strenuous walking.

How big is the tour group?

This tour works with small groups for a more genuine experience. There will be max seven people with one guide. With two guides there may be up to 14 participants out during the same evening.
