Tourists visiting Stockholm in the summer will be captivated by its crisp Scandinavian light late into the evening. But for one summer night in August, darkness is one of the main ingredients of the annual Midnattsloppet – The Midnight Run.

This is the biggest running event in the Swedish capital and a unique way to experience Stockholm by night.

Some 35,000 participants will lace up their running shoes, and whether you want to run with them or just enjoy the midnight madness from the sidelines, you’ll be in for a memorable night.

Anyone aged 14 or over can sign up for the 5km or 10km routes. Children under 12 can run the 5km route accompanied by an adult. The fee for signing up includes a t-shirt, timing chip, energy drinks and chocolate bars.

Besides the “serious” runners, there’s traditionally a masquerade group where runners dress up in funny costumes, in competition for the best-costume prize and to make it all more colourful and fun for the spectators who line the route.

Other midnight runs take place in Gothenburg, Malmö and Helsinki in Finland.
