Every 16th of April, a sea of admirers and well-wishers gather at Amalienborg Palace Square in Copenhagen to celebrate HM Queen Margrethe II’s birthday.
This annual tradition tradition involves the queen and her family waving from the palace balconies at noon, plus the ceremonial changing of the Royal Life Guard. Normally dressed in black, the guards switch to their striking red gala uniforms, adding a vivid burst of colour to the occasion.
Remember to arrive a little early at the square to secure a good viewing spot for the grand spectacle and don’t forget your camera – a photo of the beaming queen on her balcony makes for a splendid travel memento.
