Kiruna Snow Festival

All Day
Free

Many people might dislike the ice and snow of the long dark winter but in the town of Kiruna, in Sweden’s far north, they celebrate it. In fact, they have an entire festival dedicated to the white powder.

This five-day fun-filled event near the end of January involves classic winter activities such as dog sledging, figure skating, snowboarding and skiing. Not to mention, snowblower competitions, a playground made entirely of snow and contests to find the strongest man and woman by lifting… yes, snow.

The annual highlight is the International Snow Sculpture Competition, when you can watch some of the world’s best snow artists sculpt creations so cool that they’ll leave your snowman in the gutter.

But it’s not all about the snow. You’ll also find live music, painting exhibitions, workshops, fairytale readings, theatre performances, quizzes and craft fairs, as well as an award ceremony for the festival’s prestigious competitions.

Most events are free to see, including the snow sculpture competition, but some events are ticketed.
