Børglum Abbey is located in North Jutland on a remote hilltop overlooking the Limfjord. It’s one of the oldest monasteries in Scandinavia (possibly the oldest, though the exact date of its construction remains uncertain).
The Abbey began as a royal residence during the Viking era and was converted into a Monastery some time during the 12th century by the Premonstratensia order of monks. Today, the original Abbey still stands, and its 85 rooms are inhabited by the Rottbøll family.
Børglum’s annual Christmas market is the only time that the family allows the public access to these private rooms. At the market, you’ll be able to purchase traditional Christmas decorations and taste some delicious baked treats. Afterwards, you might like to take a wander around the cloisters, church, mill and herb garden.
In 2023, the market is taking place on four weekends throughout November and December; 17–19 Nov; 24–26 Nov; 28 Nov; 2–3 Dec; and 9–10 Dec.
