Restaurants in Skellefteå

If you’re arriving from southern parts of the country or one of northern Sweden’s larger cities, the relative lack of good restaurants in Skellefteå can come as a bit of a disappointment. However, there are a few interesting bars, restaurants and cafés out there, if you know where to look.

Society Café

For fika in bright, friendly surroundings, head for Society Café in the centre of town at Köpmangatan 8. Run by a British-Swedish couple, it does afternoon teas, cakes, and good-value pub-style meals, including a beef and Guinness stew. Handily, if you’re in town for a few days, there’s a noticeboard inside the café providing updates on local events.

Just along the road at Köpmangatan 9, Dallas is a strange place that’s part American-style diner and part Swedish kebab shop. It’s very popular with young families, and the food – ribs, pizzas and salads, washed down with plenty of soda – is okay for the money. As a bonus, if you eat here five times (!) you’ll get a half-price treatment at the massage place next door.

For something a little more special, try Bistro Bryggargatan, down by the waterfront at Strandgatan 32. This French-style restaurant is easily the classiest joint in town, with smartly dressed staff serving steak tartare, mussels and boeuf bourguignon, among other dishes. Meals are expensive, though – expect to pay around 200–300 SEK for a main course.

A nice but equally pricey alternative for top-end meals is the restaurant at Hotel Victoria, which turns out Swedish flavours such as reindeer and Arctic char in candlelit surroundings, with views over the city.

Verandan, the huge bar at the front of Quality Hotel Skellefteå is a good spot for evening drinks. It also runs a lunch buffet and serves classic Swedish dishes such as toast skagen from its evening menu.

If you’re visiting the Nordanå cultural centre, make time for a cuppa at its pleasant café, which does plenty of Swedish cakes and pastries. Nearby, Värdshuset Nordanågården caters mostly to groups and wedding parties, but also runs lunch buffets from Monday–Friday.
