Where to eat and drink in Jokkmokk

There aren’t a huge number of restaurants in Jokkmokk but it’s still possible to eat well without spending a fortune. Given its location, Jokkmokk is also a great place to try Arctic food, with reindeer, berries and other traditional products often appearing on local menus. All of the places listed here can be found on the map below.

The town’s smartest restaurant, Restaurang Ájtte, which is found inside the museum of the same name, specialises in Sami food. The menu here runs from smoked meats (reindeer and fish, mostly) to game and wild berries. Some of the ingredients come from the Padjelanta National Park, close to the Norwegian border. Note that the restaurant is generally only open Mon–Fri from 9am–4pm; for evening and weekend meals you’ll need to book ahead. During the week there are good lunchtime deals.

You’ll find cheaper Arctic products in Jokkmokk’s two central supermarkets – handy if you’re staying at a hostel or hotel with its own cooking facilities. Ica Rajden, right at the centre of town on Berggatan, has a good selection of fresh ingredients, as does Coop, just across the road.

Close by, Viddernas Café & Deli does homely, reasonably priced snacks and lunches. In addition to a hot soup of the day, it sells homemade pies and baked potatoes with elk and reindeer meat. Other options include smoked salmon salads and a cloudberry crème brûlée.

At Hantverkargatan 71, over on the western edge of town, you can buy Sami products (including elk, fish and smoked reindeer hearts) from the family-run shop called Sápmi Ren & Vilt.

If you’re not really in an adventurous mood, there are other options for eating in Jokkmokk. Buffé Trädet at Västra Torggatan 12 near the tourist office does stews, soups and pasta dishes (though we have also seen reindeer lasagne here too). Meanwhile, Thai Muang Isaan, which is just beside the Sámi Duodji craft shop, does Thai food in a rustic setting.

For really cheap eats, there are also a couple of kebab and pizza places around town.

Unfortunately the bar scene in Jokkmokk is practically non-existent. If you fancy a beer then the best option is the tiny local branch of Systembolaget (Sweden’s alcohol monopoly), just across the road from the Ica Rajden supermarket on Berggatan.
