Uncover Sweden’s rich Viking history on this unique, eight-hour tour from central Stockholm into the lovely Swedish countryside.
On this tour, which takes place in small groups of up to 12 participants, you’ll travel with a knowledgeable local guide and get to know the Vikings that once called this part of Scandinavia their home.
Travelling in a comfortable car or minivan, you’ll leave the city behind and head out into the countryside, before visiting a reconstructed Viking-era farm and learning about life in Viking times.
During the tour you’ll also visit Sigtuna, the oldest surviving town in Sweden, which was founded in 870 AD. Here you will learn about the Vikings and the early-medieval town, before visiting some magnificent church ruins.
A guided walk is included, as is a trip to the town’s newly opened museum, which documents how things have changed in the area from the Stone Age to the modern day. You’ll also see the Nordian Burial Mound, one of Sweden’s largest such mounds, which is an incredible 50 meters in diameter.
You’ll also have time to walk past the traditional 18th-century wooden houses on the main street, which follows an original Viking route.
After that you’ll visit the town of Vallentuna and take a fika at a local café (refreshments not included). Journey onward to a Viking parliament to feel the presence of ancient power – it’s easy to imagine the Viking men sitting in the parliament making important decisions.
Other highlights include Jarlabankes runestone bridge in Täby, and Broby Bro, a well-excavated Viking grave field. Here you will learn how the Vikings buried their dead (and what happened to them in the afterlife) before heading back to Stockholm.
Other points of interest you’ll stop at along the way include the pretty countryside area of Markim-Orkesta, a recent Unesco World Heritage candidate site, as well as an Icelandic horse farm. You’ll also visit some Viking-age bridges and handsome old rune stones.
Transportation to and from your accommodation is included.
Children aged 11 and under go free. During this tour you’ll spend time outside, so dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Inclusions: Hotel pick-up and drop-off (within 5 km of downtown Stockholm; other meeting points can be arranged). Swedish cinnamon bun. A taste of Viking-inspired mead. Tips on what to do after your tour.
Exclusions: Souvenirs and gratuities (both optional) are not included.
