When the first rumblings of breakfast-time hunger begin, there’s no better place to head than Unik, the classy café that’s tucked away inside Vetenskapens Hus, part of the Luleå University of Technology.
Here you’ll find crusty baguettes made with bundles of fresh salad, plus good coffee, crumbly croissants and fruit salads that are topped with Greek yoghurt and honey. Maybe because of the steady stream of students passing through, prices are reasonable; you’ll be able to get a hearty breakfast here for less than 100 SEK.
At lunchtimes there’s a lot more to choose from, including smoked-salmon salads, grilled sandwiches and wraps. Different hot specials are also served up every day – these go for 95 SEK and include salad, bread, a cold drink and coffee or tea. Beers and wines are on sale too.
The atmosphere at Unik is chilled, with tea lights flickering on each of the small tables, and there’s a surprisingly cosmopolitan-feeling in the air. One of the managers is from New Zealand, and he seems to have brought a little bit of that country’s cool café culture all the way here to northern Sweden.
