Hotell Vinterpalatset

Overall 8

Homely and central hotel

8

With chocolate-brown timber cladding and chunky stone foundations, this old, alpine-style building is a really homely option close to the centre of Kiruna.

When it’s snowing, it looks an absolute picture – especially when compared with some of the boring hotel blocks elsewhere in town.

Privately owned, Hotell Vinterpalatset dates all the way back to 1904 but is surprisingly up-to-date inside. Rooms are a good size, with elegant, classic-style interiors and lots of soft furnishings. They’re all decorated slightly differently, but the bedrooms all have their own en-suite bathrooms.

A row of parking spaces can be found right outside the hotel – leave your car here and it’s only a five-minute walk uphill to Kiruna’s main drag, where you’ll find the bulk of the city’s shops and restaurants.

Unfortunately Hotell Vinterpalatset lost one of its big selling points (its close proximity to the train station) when services started calling at a new location north of town. We still say Hotell Vinterpalatset is one of the best picks in Kiruna though; rates are reasonable, with breakfast in the nice dining area just off the lobby included as standard, and there’s a sauna and hot tub for guests to relax in.
