In Sweden, Walpurgis celebrations take place all over the country as the long northern winter finally gives away to spring.

Traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits before animals are put to pasture, some Swedes now take advantage of the occasion as an opportunity to get rid of their old odds and ends – the bonfires can get pretty big.

The biggest Walpurgis Night in Stockholm takes place at Skansen, by day an open-air museum and zoo on the island Djurgården, where the traditional end-of-winter bonfire has been lit every year since 1894.

Starting at 3pm, the day consists of traditional songs and celebrations until the bonfire is lit when night falls, before festivities continue with concerts, music and dancing.
