The small mining town of Gällivare in Swedish Lapland is once again playing host to the annual Santa Winter Games, which has been going strong since 2003.
The games commence at 11.45am on December 10th with a parade from Storgatan 3 to the main square. From 12pm, Santas from all over the world will then compete in various events for the title of ‘Santa of the Year’. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a fancy dress competition; the Santa Winter Games is a serious sporting event.
Santa Apple from Hong Kong, last year’s champion, underwent an intense boot camp that gave him the winning edge. He’ll be looking to defend his title this year but faces stiff competition from China’s Santa Jim, Germany’s Santa Axel, Sweden’s Santa Jocke and several others. This year’s events are yet to be announced but expect to witness anything from porridge-eating and parcel-stacking to reindeer-lassoing and even karaoke.
