Pony and trap fan? The thunder of hooves on mud combines with all the usual excitement of the race track at Gothenburg’s Olympiatravet, one of Sweden’s biggest harness racing events.
Harness racing is a big deal in Sweden, and up to 15,000 spectators will watch some of the top horses in the sport compete at the Åbytravet racetrack, just south of central Gothenburg.
Horses and jockeys achieve near-celebratory status and the final of the event is followed by a meet-and-greet session with steeds and coachmen alike.
Doors open at 10.30am on the day and the racing itself gets started at around 12.45pm. The racetrack offers a good selection of bistros and restaurants if you want to get a bite to eat. And of course, there will be ample opportunity to have a flutter or two.
