Liquorice is not just a bitter-tasting black candy in Denmark: it’s a national institution. So much so that Copenhagen has an entire festival devoted to it.
Promising a ‘sensual journey into the world of liquorice’, the festival offers the chance to join enthusiasts from all over the world in tasting various forms of liquorice. There’s raw liquorice and gourmet liquorice – you’ll even find liquorice-based cakes, chocolate, caramel and beer.
A ticket covers entry to a ‘show kitchen’ where experts demonstrate their use of liquorice in recipes and share their tips and tricks, followed by tasting in the kitchen as well as in the exhibition area.
Liquorice souvenirs can be purchased from individual stands and the festival also offers a take-home goody bag for 60 DKK.
