During the first couple of weekends of December, the streets of Odense will come alive with fairytale magic. Odense is famous for being the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen and its annual Old Town Christmas market evokes the feeling of Christmas during the famous writer’s era.
The event promises plenty of ‘song, hygge and experiences’ and its program will be packed with circus performances, concerts, exhibitions and parades. You can ride carousels and horse-drawn carriages, then sample rice pudding, doughnuts and mulled wine from stalls lining the streets.
Keep your eyes peeled for Andersen’s fictional characters, plus street performers and goblins who’ll be prancing about. Odense also contains a wealth of historical buildings and sights that will keep you occupied even once you tire of all the Christmas celebrations; the city is older than the Vikings.
