The Ildsfestregatta, or Fire Festival Regatta, is a special festival held every third year in the Danish town of Silkeborg, around 40km west of Aarhus.
The festival includes concerts, dance exhibitions, food stalls, carnival rides, and, of course, a regatta. The atmosphere is electric, as you’d expect from a traditional family friendly festival that’s been running in Silkeborg for well over a century.
One of the highlights of the festival is the five-day European Fireworks Competition, held every night at midnight at the lake known as Langsøen.
Pyrotechnic masters from across Europe come to Silkeborg to claim the title of European Fireworks Champion, and the shows they put on to win the contest are amazing to watch. It’ll make for a lot of late nights (and probably some scared pets), but the spectacle is well worth catching if you’re going to be in town.
