The world – or at least the Swedish city of Trollhättan – will be your oyster on January 26th, as 26 competitors from 14 European nations go head-to-head armed with knives. Oyster opening is a serious business that can draw more than 1000 spectators to the Nova Arena, where Stephen Noland from Ireland will defend his hard-earned title from last year.
The two best oyster openers from each country’s national competition are invited to compete on the big stage, with competitors from Sweden, Norway and Denmark amongst others. They will be judged on timing and presentation by a large jury that is lead by the judge of honour, Swedish masterchef Leif Mannerström.
The oysters are specially selected and each competitor has to open and prepare 30 pieces, using just a knife, a cloth and trays for presentation. If you’re not left completely ‘shell-shucked’ by the intense competition, you can sample the tasty treats yourself at the Oyster and Champagne Bar. Nova Arena also hosts a food and craft fair selling local produce as well as different kinds of entertainment.
