You won’t find better surroundings for a Christmas market than the Museum of Cultural History (Norsk Folkemuseum), which is located on a small peninsula just west of the city centre.

Out here, the world’s oldest open-air museum will draw you in between its many historic buildings, which were collected from all around Norway. The real jewel is the 12th-century stave church, which looks like a set from the TV-series Vikings.

During the first two weekends of December you can immerse yourself in this hands-on history lesson while browsing more than 100 old-style market stalls, which tempt visitors with traditional sweet treats and unique gifts to bring home.

Authentic products can also be found at the museum’s permanent workshops, such as the pottery, the silversmith and the candle factory.

The most popular workshop among kids is bound to be Santa’s own, while adults might prefer to check in at some of the atmospheric cafes around the site. Remember to bring cash as there’s no ATM inside the museum.
