The Tivoli Gardens amusement park opened in 1843 but it wasn’t until 1994 that Christmas celebrations began to be held here. Today, the entire park is opened up for revellers and Christmas at Tivoli Gardens is one of the biggest events in Copenhagen’s winter calendar.
In the days before Christmas, the famed amusement park transforms into a winter wonderland where snow, decorations, little wooden homes and hundreds of thousands of festive lights are spread throughout the park grounds. The kids will be able to meet Santa and his reindeer, and Danish Christmas traditions such as the Saint Lucia procession can be viewed as well.
The centerpiece of Christmas at Tivoli is the Christmas Market, where you can buy gifts, crafts, souvenirs, and warm food and drink, including the famed Danish hot wine called gløgg that is sure to chase away the winter chill.
Tivoli’s usual rides and attractions will be running as well, though the holiday lights and decorations are so spectacular that they’re well worth the price of admission alone. This is a staple of the Copenhagen Christmas season, so bundle up and join the rest of the city in enjoying Christmastime at Tivoli!
