Beautifully sited along the northeastern edge of Södermalm, Fotografiska is a fabulously roomy exhibition space showcasing contemporary photography from around the world. Lots of tourists make the trip out to this gallery and most leave the place feeling impressed.
But as there are as many as 20 different exhibitions per year (there’s no permanent collection), experiences can and do vary wildly.
The galleries occupy an old customs warehouse – a lovely redbrick structure that’s skirted the waterfront here since the early 1900s.
Photographers who’ve had their work exhibited at Fotografiska since it opened in 2010 include respected names like David LaChapelle and Anders Petersen. However, space is often made for new and emerging photographers too, including plenty from Sweden and other parts of Scandinavia.
Workshops for budding photographers take place in the gallery’s photography academy at basement level, with special themed courses in everything from photojournalism to landscape photography.
If the weather is clear, it’s worth making time for a cuppa in the second-floor café. The vibe is relaxed and big windows provide impressive views over the city but unfortunately the food prices are deep into rip-off territory.
You’ll enter and exit Fotografiska through the shop, which is stacked with books on photography, plus lots of fun gifts for photographer friends back home: lens-shaped coffee cups and selfie sticks, to name just a couple.

Getting there
The easiest way to get to Fotografiska is to walk from Slussen T-bana station. Leave the station, cross Stadsgårdsleden (the main road) and follow the water east for eight to 10 minutes, passing the Birka Cruises terminal en route.
