Old-fashioned coffee shop

7

One of the things we love about Stockholm (and Sweden in general) is that there are still loads of independent cafés. Sure, Starbucks has arrived, but lots of smaller places are still doing well.

A good example is Sturekatten, a wonderfully cosy and characterful konditori in a tall, 18th Century building close to Östermalmstorg T-bana.

This long-running café is spread over a dozen or so lounge-like rooms that are decorated with doilies, still-life paintings and a whole second-hand shop’s worth of old tables and chairs.

The prices here are a little higher than average – we paid 45 SEK for a small but delicious piece of carrot cake. There’s a huge selection of other tasty baked goods on sale, along with 20-odd different types of tea.

If you’re struggling to find a seat (and it does get busy) you can always sit in the sunny courtyard down at ground level.
