Update 19/04/2016: this place is closed for renovation until 2018, but you can still buy goodies at a temporary food hall next door.
There are saluhallar (indoor food markets) in cities across Sweden, but none are quite as exclusive as Östermalms Saluhall, which sits at the heart of Stockholm’s wealthiest neighbourhood.
Opened in 1888, this redbrick market hall is a real top-end shopping spot, with just 18 traders selling high-quality products from pretty wooden stalls.
Typically Swedish products like elk and reindeer are available, though be aware that the prices are pretty high, even by Stockholm standards. This is where some of the city’s top restaurants source their ingredients.
The market is really quite small but it’s still a fun place to explore, even if you don’t want to buy anything. But you might like to put together a few ingredients from here and make your own picnic (the Humlegården park is just a few minutes’ walk away).
The stall owners, many of whom have been here for years, will be happy to tell you about where their products come from. A lot of the stuff is locally sourced.
If you get peckish and want to eat straight away, there’s a sushi bar inside, along with a couple of cafés.
