Routes North is an independent travel guide covering the whole of Scandinavia (that’s Denmark, Norway and Sweden), plus Nordic destinations a little further afield, like Finland, Iceland and Greenland.
We started with one clear mission: to help people discover Scandinavia, regardless of their budget. Scandinavia can be super expensive to travel around, and we wanted to show that it’s possible to visit (and actually have fun!) without breaking the bank.
Since those early days, when we pounded the pavements of Stockholm and Copenhagen in search of cheap food and great places to stay, we’ve gone on to help people understand and appreciate all aspects of Nordic culture, from design and music to the region’s unique languages and culture. Each month, more than 150,000 people use our guides.
Meet our team
Steve Vickers
Founder
British journalist Steve Vickers has researched and written more than 15 guidebooks across Europe and Asia. He’s written about Scandinavia for Rough Guides, The Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian and many more, and has spent the past 12 years exploring Scandinavia in search of the perfect cinnamon bun. He’s married to a Swede (an actual Swedish person, not a root vegetable) and he speaks Swedish with an English accent.
Amanda Tomlin

Amanda has been a travel writer for 35 years. She’s written and edited countless travel books, including the Rough Guide to Sweden. She loves writing about all things Scandinavia, from Danish design and Swedish saunas to Norwegian national parks. Walking long-distance footpaths is her passion, and her favourite Nordic country is Iceland, where she’s hiked across volcanic landscapes to bathe in warm natural springs, and watched whales swimming in the Atlantic.

Originally from California, Zoe is an avid traveller and a passionate language learner. As a self-taught Swedish speaker, she loves Scandinavian culture and enjoys nothing more than immersing herself in the language and customs of the region. Zoe has traveled extensively through Sweden and Denmark. She has a deep understanding of the nuances of these cultures and is always eager to share her insights with others. Not to mention her love for walking through the streets of Gamla Stan!

Danny first visited the Nordics in 2016 on a solo trip to Copenhagen, a city he loved so much that he later moved there. Danny also lived in Stockholm for a brief period in 2019 and enjoys hopping around Northern Europe in search of hiking trails, pastries, and coffee. And when he’s not doing that, you can catch him cycling around Copenhagen and photographing the city’s colourful streets.
